Why Montessori?
An approach rooted in science, guided by love — and trusted by Toronto families for nearly two decades.
An education built for the whole child.
The Montessori approach provides children with enduring intellectual capabilities through social and emotional learning frameworks. Rather than a curriculum imposed from above, it develops the complete child — academics alongside creative thinking, empathy, and perseverance.
Early skill development in problem-solving, resilience, and interpersonal interaction prepares children not just for the next grade, but for a productive, purposeful adulthood.
The Absorbent Mind.
Maria Montessori observed through decades of study that children have a unique and remarkable ability to create impressions and absorb information effortlessly from their environment — what she called the Absorbent Mind.
This insight shapes everything at Odyssey. Our prepared environments are crafted to feed that natural hunger: rich in texture, beauty, order, and invitation. Learning doesn't happen to children here. It happens through them.
- Independence — children build genuine self-sufficiency
- Community — mixed ages teach empathy and leadership
- Critical thinking — open-ended exploration, not rote memorisation
- Freedom within structure — autonomy balanced with clear boundaries
- Concentration — long uninterrupted work cycles cultivate deep focus
Born from a mother's belief in something better.
Odyssey's founder, Mary, relocated from South Africa to Toronto and enrolled her children in Montessori education. What she witnessed — the calm, the capability, the genuine joy in learning — changed everything.
In 2001 she obtained her Casa Teaching Diploma. Then, in 2006, she opened the doors of Odyssey Montessori at our Sorauren Avenue location in Roncesvalles. A decade later, the Christie Campus joined, bringing the same warmth and rigour to central Toronto.
Today, Odyssey is a Montessori Canada accredited school trusted by hundreds of Toronto families — and the mission is exactly what it has always been: to follow the child, with patience and love.
Almost twenty years of joyful journeys.
